Canadian Resident from Pakistan Arrested for Plotting Terror Attack in New York

A Pakistani man residing in Canadian was apprehended recently for allegedly plotting an attack targeting Jewish individuals in New York City, according to a statement by the US Justice Department. The suspect, identified as Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known by the alias Shahzeb Jadoon, is 20 years old. His arrest occurred on Wednesday following charges filed in the United States.

The plan, as per the criminal complaint, was to carry out a mass shooting in Brooklyn at a Jewish center, aligning it with the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas assault on Israel. The intention behind this attack was to support the Islamic State (IS). The suspect’s discussions with what he believed were fellow conspirators actually took place with undercover law enforcement officers, helping authorities track his plans.

Further details reveal that Khan was arrested by Canadian law enforcement in Ormstown, located around 12 miles (19 kilometers) from the US-Canada border. The US Justice Department has stated that they will pursue his extradition from Canada.

Attorney General Merrick Garland praised the collaborative efforts of both the FBI and Canadian law enforcement, acknowledging their swift action in preventing the potential attack. He emphasized the importance of such partnerships in countering terrorism threats.

The charges brought against Khan include attempting to offer material support and resources to a foreign terrorist group. If convicted, Khan could face up to 20 years in prison.
