Warnings of potential urban flooding in Karachi have been issued, as the city prepares for a rain-carrying weather system expected to move closer. The weather system, currently about 320 kilometers away from Karachi, has raised concerns among meteorologists. Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz has emphasized the need for citizens to remain cautious, as this rain spell is likely to persist until August 31.
At present, the deep depression is centered over Indian Gujarat, and it is expected to bring strong winds with speeds between 28 and 33 nautical miles. According to the Met Office, Karachi might receive significant rainfall, ranging from 150mm to 200mm. Furthermore, the city may face another windstorm, as the weather system approaches the southern region of Karachi, increasing the chances of heavy rainfall.
As this weather system advances, Karachi is being urged to prepare for the possible impacts. The authorities have highlighted the importance of staying alert, given the predicted weather conditions. With the weather system likely to bring heavy rain and strong winds, residents are advised to take necessary precautions.
Inland deep depression
Severe flooding has been impacting India’s Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan, primarily due to a land-based deep depression. This weather system, which typically forms over the sea, intensified unexpectedly over land. The situation has been worsened by the moisture influx, either from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea or from the wet soils along its path.
A deep depression, characterized by wind speeds of 51-62 kilometers per hour, usually acts as a precursor to a tropical cyclone. However, its development and strengthening over land are quite unusual. It is just one step below a tropical cyclone, which has slightly higher wind speeds of 62-88 kilometers per hour.
