China Laser Satellite Crushes Starlink With 5x Faster Speed

Chinese scientists have done something amazing. They sent data from space to Earth at a super-fast speed of 1 Gbps. What makes it even more impressive is that they used only a small 2-watt laser to send the signal from a satellite 36,000 kilometers above Earth. This speed is almost five times faster than what Starlink gives right now. This stunning success highlights the growing power of the China Laser Satellite system.

Smart Tech to Beat Signal Loss

Professor Wu Jian from Peking University and Liu Chao from the Chinese Academy of Sciences led the project. Their team used a smart method by combining two special techniques Adaptive Optics and Mode Diversity Reception. This new idea helped solve a major issue: Earth’s atmosphere often shakes and spreads laser signals, making them weak before they reach the ground. But their solution kept the signals strong and clear. Their work marks a major breakthrough in the China Laser Satellite technology.

China Laser Satellite Tech at Lijiang Observatory

In southwest China, at the Lijiang Observatory, scientists used a large 1.8-meter telescope to receive laser signals from a satellite flying 36,700 kilometers above Earth. To read the signals clearly, they used 357 tiny mirrors that carefully adjusted the light as it came in. They also had a special multi-layered device with a custom-made chip that picked out the clearest signal paths, making sure the data was received quickly and without errors. Such accuracy is essential in keeping the China Laser Satellite communication stable.

A recent study shared in the Chinese journal Acta Optica Sinica explains how this new method made the laser signals more powerful and clear. Because of the improved system, the rate of receiving useful data increased from 72% to more than 91%. This means the connection has become much stronger and more reliable than it was before. The study adds to the growing evidence that the China Laser Satellite system is redefining high-speed space communication.

This achievement shows that China is making fast progress in space laser communication. In 2020, their Shijian-20 satellite stood out by reaching a powerful 10Gbps laser speed. Although China didn’t share details about the energy it used, the success was seen as a big step forward. Some reports claim that when the U.S. tried to follow the satellite, it changed its route proving how important and carefully protected this technology has become. It also shows how far the China Laser Satellite program has come in just a few years.

As more countries race to improve satellite internet and build powerful space data networks, China’s latest progress could give it a strong advantage. This step forward might help China take the lead in the future of global communication moving far ahead of systems like SpaceX’s Starlink that depend on low-Earth orbit. With the speed and stability of the China Laser Satellite, the future of space internet may soon be reshaped.
