Cricket is making its Olympic debut at the LA28 Games, along with four other exciting new sports: baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash—adding a fresh wave of excitement to the event.

For most sports, six teams will compete, with squash standing out by debuting with 16-player draws for both men and women, bringing a fresh twist to the Games.

Following its successful debut at Tokyo 2020, the 3×3 basketball tournament is expanding to include 12 teams per gender, up from eight. This growth promises to bring even more thrilling action and energy to the upcoming Games!

LA28, A Game-Changer for Gender Equality in Sports

The LA 2028 Games, happening from July 14-30, will showcase events across Southern California, including the new Inglewood Stadium for swimming. Organizers aim to keep the athlete count stable while offering more medal chances and improving gender balance. It promises to be a dynamic, inclusive, and exciting event for all!

The OIC has revealed a record-breaking 351 medal events across 36 sports. A total of 11,198 athletes, with 5,655 women and 5,543 men, will compete, reflecting a significant move towards gender equality in the Olympic Games. This is a powerful step forward, showcasing the growing inclusivity and balance in global sports.

In the upcoming Olympics, aquatics will host 55 medal events, while athletics will feature 48, keeping them as central sports. Swimming will also introduce new 50-meter races in backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke for both men and women, adding more excitement to the competition.

Football, Rowing, and Rock Climbing Break New Ground

New events are also making their way into other sports. Rowing will introduce coastal beach sprints, and rock climbing will separate the boulder and lead competitions into distinct medal events, raising the stakes for the Games.

Football is breaking new ground with the women’s tournament now featuring 16 teams, outpacing the 12-team men’s competition for the first time ever. It’s a huge win for women’s football and a sign of how far the sport has come!

To promote gender equality, water polo now features 12 teams for both men and women. Additionally, the Games will showcase 25 mixed-gender events, along with exciting new additions in sports like archery, athletics, golf, gymnastics, rowing, and table tennis.

With 10,500 athletes in total and 698 additional spots for new sports, the IOC is pushing for more inclusivity. LA28 is making huge strides toward gender equality, featuring 161 events for women, 165 for men, and 25 mixed-gender events.
