In a recent attack, the United States used its powerful B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to hit three important nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
The B-2 bomber is one of America’s most powerful and reliable weapons. It can silently enter enemy areas and hit strongly protected places, even underground nuclear sites that are hidden from view. Its unique ability to carry and deliver bunker busters makes it a deadly tool against deeply buried threats.
What is B-2 Spirit?
Each B-2 bomber comes with a massive cost of about $2.1 billion, making it the most expensive fighter plane ever built. It was developed by Northrop Grumman and entered production in the late 1980s. But after the Soviet Union collapsed, the US reduced its plans and ended up building only 21 of these advanced jets.
The B-2 bomber can fly more than 6,000 nautical miles (around 11,100 kilometers) without needing to refuel, allowing it to launch missions directly from US bases. If refuelled in the air, it can reach almost any part of the world. This has already been proven in past missions from Missouri to places like Afghanistan, Libya, and most recently, Iran.
The B-2 bomber can carry more than 40,000 pounds (about 18,100 kilograms) of weapons, including both standard bombs and nuclear ones. Its weapons are stored inside the aircraft, which helps it avoid detection by radar. One of the most powerful bombs it can carry is the GBU-57A/B a 30,000-pound “Bunker Busters” designed to destroy targets hidden deep underground.
Some reports say that the US dropped six Bunker Busters bombs on Iran’s Fordow nuclear research center during the attack. This move highlighted the real-world use of bunker busters in high-risk combat scenarios.
The B-2 bomber is designed to be flown by just two pilots. Its modern systems handle many tasks on their own, which means fewer crew members are needed, without affecting the aircraft’s performance during important missions.
These bomber is designed with special materials that absorb radar waves and has a carefully shaped body with sharp angles. This helps it stay out of sight from enemy radar. Its radar signal is so small that it’s often compared to a tiny bird, making it extremely hard to detect with regular radar.
Bunker Busters Power, What the GBU-57 Can Do
The MOP is a 30,000-pound bomb and the biggest non-nuclear weapon in America’s arsenal. It’s specially designed to crush strong underground bunkers. Because of its massive size, the B-2 bomber can carry only one or two in a single flight but even one hit can cause massive destruction deep underground.
This bomb is about 20.5 feet (6.25 meters) long and is guided by GPS to hit targets with high accuracy. It’s powerful enough to break through more than 200 feet of solid concrete, making it highly effective against deeply buried bunkers and heavily protected underground locations. Such deep-penetration bombs are prime examples of advanced bunker busters in action.
Non-Nuclear Weapons on Board
The B-2 bomber carries JDAM bombs, which use GPS to accurately hit fixed targets. These bombs can be dropped in large numbers during a single mission. The B-2 can strike several locations at the same time with great precision, making it a strong weapon in today’s battlefield.
JSOW bombs allow the B-2 to attack from a long distance, so it avoids flying into dangerous enemy airspace. These glide bombs help the plane stay hidden while getting close to its target, keeping its stealth strong and striking accurately.
With JASSM missiles, the B-2 bomber can accurately hit targets from a long distance. These stealthy missiles make it harder for enemies to spot, and the upgraded JASSM-ER can reach targets more than 500 miles away. Though not classified as bunker busters, many of these advanced missiles work in tandem with deep-strike bombs to maximize impact.
Nuclear Strike Power
The B-2 Spirit is a key part of America’s nuclear defense, able to deliver nuclear bombs quietly and accurately. It can carry up to 16 powerful B83 nuclear bombs on a single mission.
