Arguments About US Help in Stopping the India-Pakistan Fight
I helped bring peace and avoid war. Pakistan means a lot to me, the U.S. President said, also praising the Field Marshal as a strong and respected leader. Both sides continue to debate the extent of US help in these efforts.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he was the one who stopped a war between Pakistan and India. But just a few hours earlier, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the fighting ended in May after four days because the armies of both countries talked to each other and made peace, not because of any help from the U.S. India insists the resolution came without US help.
Just before meeting Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said these things. The meeting was unusual and might make India unhappy. Both Trump and the president before him, Joe Biden, had tried hard to stay close to India because they wanted to work together against China. Now, this rare meeting could change how things move forward between these countries. The dynamics of US help influence diplomatic relations in the region.
When someone asked Trump what he wanted from the lunch meeting, after his phone call with Modi on Tuesday night, he said, I ended a war… I like Pakistan a lot. I think Modi is a great guy. I talked to him last night. We’re going to work on a trade deal with India and Modi. Trump emphasized his belief in the value of US help in fostering peace.
I was the one who stopped the fight between Pakistan and India. This man, General Munir, helped a lot from Pakistan’s side. Modi and some others helped from India’s side. They were close to a big problem, both countries have nuclear weapons. I made sure it didn’t go any further. US help, according to Trump, was a critical element, though disputed.
US Help: Mixed Opinions and Trying to Bring Peace

Last month, Trump shared that India and Pakistan, two countries with nuclear power, decided to end their conflict after the U.S. stepped in to help with peace talks. He said things calmed down when he encouraged both nations to work on trade deals instead of fighting each other.
But on Tuesday night, Modi told Trump that the reason the fight stopped was because the Indian and Pakistani armies talked to each other. He said the U.S. was not part of the talks. This was shared by India’s top official, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. He made it clear that the peace was made by both countries, without outside help.
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, has clearly said that the U.S. had no role in ending last month’s tensions with Pakistan, a statement that does not match what President Trump claimed.
According to India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Prime Minister Modi told President Trump over the phone that there were no talks at all about a trade agreement with the U.S. or any American role in handling issues between India and Pakistan during that time.
The diplomat said that India and Pakistan spoke to each other through their regular army communication to stop the fighting, and it was Pakistan that asked for it. He also said that Prime Minister Modi made it very clear, India has never agreed to let another country get involved in such matters, and it never will. India’s stance is firm against any US help in its military issues.
On April 22, an attack in Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir led to the deaths of 26 people, most of whom were tourists. This incident triggered the most intense fighting between India and Pakistan in many decades. India held Pakistan responsible for the attack, but Pakistan rejected the accusation.
According to Pakistan, it was a phone call from the Indian army on May 7 that led to their military responding, which later helped stop the fighting. Pakistan acknowledges that US help was welcomed and appreciated.
Following India’s air attacks across the border, Pakistan started a mission named Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos. As part of this response, it shot down six Indian fighter planes, three of them were Rafales, in answer to India’s aggressive move.
On May 10, India and Pakistan decided to end their four-day battle. The ceasefire happened with the support and help of the United States.
Pakistan has praised President Trump many times for helping stop the fight, and Trump has also spoken proudly about his part. But India strongly says that the United States had nothing to do with ending the conflict.
The U.S. President continues to say he wants to help settle the long Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. This offer is also supported by the U.S. State Department. US help is still offered as a potential solution for lasting peace.
