Labor Day 2024: What’s Open and What’s Closed

As the summer of 2024 draws to a close, Labor Day, observed on Monday, September 2, provides Americans with an opportunity for one final long weekend. This holiday, which unofficially marks the end of summer, is a time when many students are preparing to return to school, and families may seize the chance to enjoy a beach day or host a barbecue.

Although Labor Day is meant to celebrate the American labor movement and the significant contributions of workers to the nation’s economy, it doesn’t imply that daily routines come to a halt. Many people will still have errands to run, such as visiting the bank or picking up groceries.

For those needing to make a quick trip to the store, they will find most retail stores open. Kroger and its subsidiaries — including Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, and others — will operate under normal business hours. Similarly, major retailers like Walmart and Target will welcome customers throughout the day.

Stores and Shops

Pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens will mostly be open as well, though it’s worth noting that some local CVS stores might reduce their hours. Walgreens stores will operate as usual, with most pharmacies closed except for 24-hour locations and specific sites. However, Costco will be an exception, as this wholesale retailer will not be open on Labor Day.

Postal Services

As for postal services, sending mail through the United States Postal Service will not be possible on Monday since it will be closed. UPS services will also be paused except for Express Critical, and only select locations will remain open. FedEx, on the other hand, will keep its FedEx Custom Critical service running, though its FedEx Office will operate on a modified schedule.

Banking Services

Since Labor Day is a federal banking holiday, banks will not be open. Despite this, ATMs and online banking options will still be accessible. The financial world will also observe the holiday, with the US stock market, including NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange, suspending trading for the day.

Government Agencies

Government offices, including federal buildings, will remain closed. This closure extends to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), local libraries, and state and local courts, all of which will not be in operation on Labor Day.
