Multan Crackdown: 1,270 KG of Banned Plastic Shopping Bags Seized

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) recently seized 1,270 kilograms of plastic shopping bags. These bags, which are less than 75 microns in thickness, have been prohibited by the Punjab government.

According to Assistant Director Hameed Akhtar, inspections have been rigorously conducted by EPD teams. From June 5 to the present day, 871 shops have been checked. During these inspections, a total fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on shopkeepers who violated the ban.

Daily inspections have been carried out to ensure compliance with provincial regulations. The aim is to mitigate the environmental pollution caused by plastic waste. Hameed Akhtar emphasized that the department is committed to creating a pollution-free environment for citizens. Efforts are continuously being made to achieve this goal.

Furthermore, a prior order from the Lahore High Court (LHC) played a crucial role in this initiative. Justice Shahid Kareem issued a restraining order, prohibiting departmental stores throughout the province from using plastic shopping bags for essential commodities. This decision followed a petition filed by Advocate Salman Khan Niazi.

In summary, the EPD’s ongoing efforts, supported by judicial mandates, are focused on reducing plastic pollution and enforcing the ban effectively.
