A high-level workshop, known as the “Connection Camp,” will be conducted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on September 22 to deliberate on the future direction of Pakistan’s national cricket team. The meeting has been scheduled as a result of growing concerns over recent performances, especially after Pakistan’s loss to Bangladesh in the Test series.
It has been reported that Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB Chairman, will preside over the event. Attendees will include notable figures such as head coaches Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten, along with senior players, coaches, and other officials. The main topic of discussion will revolve around potential leadership changes within the team, particularly regarding the position of the white-ball captain, currently held by Babar Azam. Sources suggest that Babar’s removal from this role is under serious consideration ahead of the upcoming tour to Australia.
In addition to the concerns about Babar Azam captaincy, the leadership of Test captain Shan Masood is also being reassessed. Since stepping into the Test captaincy role after Babar Azam vacated the position following the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shan Masood has faced significant criticism. Under his leadership, Pakistan Cricket has struggled, enduring five consecutive Test defeats.
PCB Considers New Leadership as Pakistan Hits Lowest Test Ranking Since 1965
Australia’s 3-0 win over Pakistan and Bangladesh’s 2-0 series victory contributed to Pakistan’s steep fall in the ICC Test Team Rankings, where the team now occupies the eighth spot. This represents Pakistan’s lowest position in Test cricket since 1965.
The PCB is actively exploring alternative captaincy candidates, and discussions are underway to determine who might be better suited to lead the team moving forward. The pressure to make changes has intensified after the disappointing results at home and abroad.
Previously, Shan Masood’s appointment as Test captain followed Babar Azam resignation from the role. Though Babar was reappointed as the white-ball captain, Shan took over the red-ball duties. However, the poor results under his leadership, combined with the team’s significant ranking drop, have led to widespread criticism of his performance as a skipper. Transitioning to new leadership appears to be an important focus for the PCB as they prepare for future series.
