On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Syria’s president in Saudi Arabia. This follows his surprising announcement that the U.S. will remove all US Restrictions on Syria Islamist-led government. The decision has raised concerns due to the Syrian leadership’s past connections to Al-Qaeda.
President Trump, despite some reservations from within his administration, stated on Tuesday in Riyadh that he would remove the US restrictions on Syria. He has also agreed to meet with interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who will be in Riyadh for discussions with the Gulf Cooperation Council.
President Trump began his four-day visit to the Gulf with a grand welcome and important business deals. Among the key agreements were Saudi Arabia’s pledge to invest $600 billion in the U.S. and a $142 billion arms deal with the kingdom.
In the evening, President Trump will travel to Doha, the capital of Qatar, to meet Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and other leaders. As a key U.S. ally, Qatar plans to announce a major investment in the United States, totaling hundreds of billions of dollars.
While Israel, a key U.S. ally, has been against lifting U.S. restrictions on Syria. President Trump shared on Tuesday that both Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. Who are close to him, urged him to take this step.
Trump’s talks with Sharaa, a former Al-Qaeda leader who played a key role in the December ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, are expected to attract significant attention. Many will be closely watching to see how committed the U.S. is to improving its relationship with Damascus. Sharaa severed his connections with Al-Qaeda in 2016.
