Social media platform X accused of facilitating terrorists

The world’s most widely used social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, X, has been accused of providing facilities to terrorists.

Elon Musk‘s social media platform, X, faced intense scrutiny when rumors surfaced that it provided subscriptions to known terrorist groups and individuals subject to restrictions in the United States. Social media platform X stands accused of facilitating terrorists, prompting widespread concern and calls for action..

The TikTok Transparency Project (TTP) revealed that X has provided blue ticks to accounts of Hezbollah representatives and other controversial figures, and X charges them around $8 per month for this service.

TTP stated that an account associated with the Houthi-affiliated Ansar Allah movement also apparently made payment for its verified tick, with over 23,000 followers on this account, despite sanctions against the Houthis in the US and UK.

The British government says it has imposed restrictions to limit the ability of the Houthis to attack international ships in the Red Sea and to promote peace, stability, and security in Yemen.

The United States has imposed sanctions on individuals, organizations, and countries deemed threats to its national security. However, X is selling premium accounts to such individuals.

After the report from TTP was published, X had removed TikTok from multiple accounts.

Critics say this issue has escalated matters, providing a social platform to individuals and organizations facing US sanctions, despite claims of adhering to legal responsibilities and despite intense scrutiny, X focused on freedom of expression online.

TTP director Katy Paul told The New York Times that it indicates X has “lost control over its platform.

X’s owner, Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and one of the wealthiest people in the world, has previously stated that they want to make the social media platform like “Town Square” where people have freedom of expression. However, recent controversies have put this vision into question, with Social media platform X accused of facilitating terrorists, raising concerns about the platform’s policies and practices regarding content moderation.
